The hardest pose in yoga is walking through the door the first time. After that, it gets easier. This short guide takes the unknown out of the way.

You don't need to be flexible

People put off yoga because they think they're not bendy enough. That's like not going to the doctor because you're sick. Stiffness is the reason to start, not the reason to wait.

Iyengar Yoga was built for exactly this. Belts, blocks and ropes bring each pose to your body, instead of forcing your body into the pose. Stiff knees, sore backs, tight shoulders — all of it has a place to stand. No experience needed. No youth required. All levels, all bodies.

What to wear

Comfortable clothes you can move and bend in — leggings, shorts, a t-shirt. Avoid anything too loose, so your teacher can see how you're moving. Yoga is practised in bare feet, so leave the socks at the door.

What to bring

Yourself. That's the list. Mats, belts, blocks, bolsters and ropes are all here, ready. Bring a water bottle if you like, and skip a heavy meal in the two hours before class.

When you arrive

Come ten minutes early. It gives you time to settle, find the room, and take a breath before we begin. Tell the teacher it's your first class, and mention any injuries, aches or surgeries — old or new. It's how we make the class fit you.

What a class feels like

Slower than you expect, and more precise. You'll be guided into each pose, one clear instruction at a time. Our classes are small, so you're seen, not lost in a crowd. You won't be asked to do anything that hurts, and you won't be the only beginner in the room.

There's a quiet that arrives partway through a class — the mind stops its chatter and pays attention to the body. Many people come for the strength and stay for that.

After class

Most people leave standing a little taller and thinking a little clearer. That evening you might sleep better; the next morning, a stiff back moves more freely. Reflect on the difference. It's the reason people keep coming back, some for twenty years.
